BAD STYLING COULD RUIN THE SHOW

The forthcoming Met Ball and the Costume Institute exhibition hold by the Metropolitan Museum of Art just announced their theme of 2016 from Anna Wintour: “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” The event will take place on May 2, it will be chaired by Johnny Ive, Taylor Swift, Anna Wintour, Nicolas Ghesquière, Karl Lagerfeld, Miuccia Prada and Idris Elba. The event is showing more than 100 pieces, including couture and ready-to-wear. The new techniques of making garments including laser-cutting, circular knitting and 3D printing will be exhibited in real-time workshops.
Every year, the Met Gala red carpet show is always an amazing thing to watch. Celebrities include actors, actresses, singers, models and sports stars would show up in gorgeous design pieces and gowns with amazing designs according to each year’s theme. But the event is also a hot gossip for people from the fashion industry or not. You might still shock by Rihanna’s giant pizza dress from last year’s red carpet show, but the designer of the dress got industry’s attention from that moment. The couture dress was designed by a Chinese designer Guo Pei, who you probably have never heard of until last year. She has been designing couture in China for more than 15 years under her own Mei Gui Fang atelier. So this was a good example the Met Gala promoted designers from all over the world just used celebrity effects, although some of the dresses might not fit everyone.
What is the difference between haute couture and prêt-à-porter? The biggest distinction is the garments are made by the hand and the machine. Technology is now a big change to the fashion world, no matter design or manufacture. It is going to change the way we see design in the future. At the same time, tech companies are trying hard to involve into the fashion world, and they are sort of succeed. One of the most influential tech companies, Apple, will sponsor the Met Ball 2016.
Since technology will be the theme, futuristic design of garments would probably be full of the whole red carpet this year. It could be an amazing scene of tech fashion couture show or a horrible scene from a Sci-Fi movie, depends on the smart styling for the show. If the styling would keep the same direction from last year, it would most likely get lots of critique from different medias around the world. Lady Gaga’s earlier style is a good example of futuristic. Some people might call it art, but as we know, most of people don’t understand her style, no matter in raw meat dress or some other wired stuffs. So if this year’s Met Ball could choose design pieces or gowns in proper ways for celebrities according to the theme, it would be a great advance for the huge event. Designers would also be promoted in a better way.
From 2014's theme: white tie and decorations to 2015's theme: China, Through the looking Glass, the fashion world was surged by those trends from the Met Ball. No doubtfully, this year's theme will definitely roll the whole industry. Let's expect what will happen!
